Why Are Bicycle Brakes Reversed in Some Countries?
Buy a bicycle in Britain and the left brake lever usually operates the rear brake, while the right operates the front.
Across most of continental Europe and North America, it is the opposite:
UK, Japan and several other markets: left = rear, right = front
Most of Europe and North America: left = front, right = rear
Australia, New Zealand, India and several Asian markets have also historically followed the British arrangement.
The obvious explanation is that these countries drive on the left.
But that isn't the whole story.
The British convention is more than 100 years old
Britain's left-side traffic tradition predates the bicycle. When effective hand-operated bicycle brakes emerged around the end of the 19th century, British manufacturers had to decide which lever should control which wheel.
By around 1900–1901, British bicycles were already appearing with an arrangement familiar to British cyclists today: left lever for the rear brake and right lever for the front.
Exactly why this arrangement was chosen is uncertain. Theories include hand signalling, traffic position and the historical preference for operating the supposedly safer rear brake while signalling.
What we do know is that the convention became established very early.
And then Britain exported millions of bicycles.
British bicycles took the convention around the world
Manufacturers such as Raleigh, Humber and BSA became major international suppliers during the golden age of the bicycle.
This helps explain why the same brake arrangement became established in places such as India, Australia and New Zealand.
A government doesn't need to legislate which brake lever controls which wheel. If bicycles arrive for decades with the rear brake on the left, mechanics assemble them that way, riders learn that way and future bicycles follow the convention.
Eventually it simply becomes normal.
But what about Japan?
Japan is particularly interesting because it was never a British colony, yet Japanese bicycles traditionally use the same left-rear/right-front arrangement.
Japan also has its own long history of left-side traffic.
One traditional explanation links this to samurai carrying their swords on the left side, making passing on the left more practical. British influence on Japan's early railway system is another suggested factor. The exact origin remains debated, but Japan formally adopted left-side road traffic by 1900.
It is therefore possible that Britain and Japan arrived at similar bicycle conventions through similar traffic logic without sharing the same colonial history.
So far, driving on the left still appears to be a strong part of the explanation.
Then things get more complicated.
Not every left-driving country follows the British convention
Thailand drives on the left and had considerable British influence during the development of modern transportation.
Yet modern bicycle components in Thailand are readily sold in the continental configuration:
left = front, right = rear.
That tells us something important.
Driving on the left does not automatically determine bicycle brake orientation.
Perhaps what matters more is which bicycle industry established the local convention.
Indonesia provides an even better test.
Indonesia also drives on the left, but its colonial history was primarily Dutch rather than British. Interestingly, the Dutch themselves historically travelled on the left before the Netherlands eventually adopted right-hand traffic. The Dutch East Indies retained left-side traffic, which later continued in modern Indonesia.
Indonesia therefore drives on the same side of the road as Britain and Japan.
But its modern bicycle market commonly uses:
left = front, right = rear.
The continental arrangement.
And that is the clue.
Brake orientation is mostly historical convention
A modern hydraulic bicycle brake has no mechanical reason why the left lever must operate the front or rear wheel. Hydraulic hoses can be routed to either caliper and manufacturers can supply brakes in either configuration.
The bicycle doesn't care which side of the road you ride on.
The rider does.
Someone who learned with the rear brake on the left expects it there. Mechanics follow the convention riders know, shops order the appropriate components, and manufacturers continue supplying that configuration.
The original reason can disappear while the convention survives.
So why do Britain, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India and some other countries still commonly put the rear brake on the left?
There probably isn't one universal reason. Traffic direction, early bicycle design, hand signalling, British bicycle exports and local cycling history all played a part.
But left-side traffic alone cannot explain it.
If it could, Indonesia would use the same brake arrangement as Britain and Japan.
It doesn't.
